Kuta is the oldest tourist retreat on the magical island of Bali in Indonesia. Blessed with a lengthy stretch of beautiful beach along the Indian Ocean, Kuta was initially famous as a surfing area. It has also been a top backpacking site in the region and continues to attract backpackers. However, the increasing popularity of Bali has served Kuta well and it has become a popular party area with a vibrant night life. Tourists visit Kuta from all over the world to let their hair down and have fun. It is especially popular with young tourists from Australia. Kuta has however, been a victim of shoddy and poorly planned development that has affected its natural beauty and ecology. During the peak tourist season, Kuta may get very crowded and stuffy. The tourist infrastructure has developed tremendously in Kuta but still falls short of accommodating all the visitors. Roads are in dilapidated condition and remain crowded with traffic of all sorts. Despite all these problems, Kuta is still a popular destination and has enough to offer every visitor to make him forget these issues. Kuta’s beach is five kilometers long and is perhaps the best in Bali. It is crowded with sunbathers, surfers and even pestering vendors but is well kept. The beach area along Legian, Seminyak and Petitenget is much less noisier and calm. Party scene is intense in Kuta and it starts right after sunset.
