Limburg is a province of Netherlands. It is the southernmost as well. It is neighbored by Gelderland (north), North Brabant (north and northwest), German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (east), Flemish province of Belgian Limburg (west) and Belgian province of Liege (south). Major cities in the province are Maastricht, provincial capital in the south, Roremond in the central part of the province and Venlo in the north. The southern part of Limburg has urban settlements like Sittard-Geleen and Parkstad. The province has gone through an economic and social transformation. It now plays the role of an all important link between Netherlands and Ruhr Metro area and Southern section of Benelux region. However, the province has paid a price for this international gateway status. The province has been hit hard by an increasing crime rate. Drug trafficking is a major law and order issue, especially in the southern part of the province.
