Once we receive your booking, we double check availability with the dive operator and reserve your spot

2. CONFIRMATION

We usually get back to you within 24 hours to confirm that your booking is final

3. 48H FREE CANCELLATION PERIOD

You then have 48 hours to take care of other travel arrangements. Your credit card will only be charged after that period

Best dive sites in Outer Cayes and Atolls of Belize

The three main atolls are Glover’s Reef Atoll, Lighthouse Reef Atoll, and Turneffe Islands Atoll. Lighthouse Reef Atoll contains the world-famous Blue Hole which is more than 1000 feet (300 meters) across and 450 feet (135 meters) deep. Glover’s Reef Atoll is the most secluded of the atolls, but is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Turneffe Islands Atoll is different from the others in that it is covered in mangroves, which provides shelter to breeding groupers. The three most popular cayes are Ambergris Caye, South Water Caye and Tobacco Caye. Of all the diving areas in Belize, Ambergris Caye is the most popular and the jumping off point for the Belize Barrier Reef.

Snorkeling in Outer Cayes and Atolls of Belize

Surface fish spotting is every bit as good as diving in some areas. The western sides of the outer cayes and atolls are protected from open ocean current. Therefore, they act as a haven for both divers and snorkelers. In addition, snorkeling tours are run to the famous Blue Hole by many companies on the cayes and atolls.

What to see

Big sea animals are the show stoppers in this part of Belize. Divers regularly spot whale sharks, nurse sharks, eagle rays, stingrays and even manatees. Schooling (and occasionally breeding) grouper, snapper, barracuda, Atlantic spadefish and horse-eyed jacks surround the walls of the atolls. Sea turtles use the area’s sandy beaches to nest during summer months.

Naturally, there is a wide variety of smaller critters as well. Everything from tiny shrimps to the endemic toadfish lives among the reefs. We are sure your logs will reflect the strange and wonderful creatures found in the outer cayes and atolls of Belize.

Description

Blackbird Caye Resort offers easy access to over 70 dive sites only minutes from shore. 

Visibility ranges between 30 and 40 meters and temperatures are warm year-round. Dive sites include local coral gardens, caves and caverns, steep and gently sloping walls, overhangs and the famous Blue Hole. Drift diving is popular. 

The on-site dive center comes with a compressor room and range of equipment for rental. 4 dive boats are available, ranging from 50ft to 37ft. All have ample shaded space, dive racks, ladders and powerful engines. 

A full range of PADI courses are offered, including specialties like underwater photographer and search and recovery. You must be advanced open water qualified to dive the blue hole, and this training can be completed while on vacation. 

Regular day trips offer a BBQ at Half Moon Caye, and boats are equipped with refreshments. The safety conscious dive team have a wealth of local diving knowledge.

Resort Description

Blackbird Caye Resort is located 25 miles off the coast of Belize City, among acres of jungle and palm trees. 

Turneffe Atoll is 24 miles long, eight miles wide and surrounded by turquoise Caribbean seas. 100+ cayes cover a tropical environment comprised of over 50 miles of coral reef. It’s not uncommon to see rays, turtles, nurse sharks, lobsters, parrot fish, moray eels and hundreds of hard and soft coral varieties during a week’s worth of diving here. 

Pastel-coloured wooden cabanas line the oceanfront, surrounded by white sand and complete with private verandas with hammocks and wicker chairs. Bedrooms are light and airy, offering air-conditioning, fans and a bathroom with warm water baths and showers.  

The resort’s blue-tiled pool overlooks the ocean and is surrounded by sun loungers and tropical vegetation. The poolside bar offers an all day snack menu in an open sided setting with sunset views and colourfully painted wooden tables and chairs.

The Blackbird Restaurant serves up buffet breakfast and lunch, with table service dinners featuring a choice of two daily specials. Enjoy local and international dishes combined with fresh seafood and fruits. Happy hour runs daily from 5pm till 6:30pm at the High Tide Bar.  

Bird watching, exploring, paddleboarding and kayaking are popular activities.

How to get there

Arrival

  • Complimentary boat transfers are provided every Wednesday and Saturday. 
  • The journey is a scenic boat ride, lasting around 1.5 hrs. We ask that all guests reach Belize City International Airport no later than 2.30pm local time, to allow sufficient time to clear customs. the boat then leaves at 3:30 pm local time. If you are unable to make this, you may need to pay for a chartered flight to the island. 
  • A chartered flight to the island's air strip can be arranged and takes around 10-15 minutes from Belize Municipal Airport (additional cost, advance notice required). 

Departure

  • You may depart on the complimentary boat transfer every Wednesday or Saturday, or arrange a private flight (additional cost, advance notice required). 
  • Please book flights later than 12.30pm
