Visit Bangka for rock pinnacles, white sandy bottoms, kaleidoscopic soft corals and sloping reefs. The region’s unique ecosystem is home to a number of species, including resident dugongs, pilot whales, dolphins, turtles, reef sharks, cuttlefish, eagle rays and great barracuda. The colourful reefs are home to copious macro life, including ghost pipefish, harlequin and tiger shrimp, frogfish and several species of pygmy seahorse. If that’s not enough, then you should know that blue ring, mimic, reef and wonderpus octopus are also spotted here regularly! Make the trip to this tranquil island and discover a generous number of pristine dive sites, all offering year-round diving in warm 28- 29 degree seas, boasting up to 25m visibility. The jaw-dropping variety of species combined with calm waters create ideal conditions for less experienced divers and any budding underwater photographers out there. With 28 dive sites to choose from, all within an hour’s drive of the resort, there are plenty of options to please even the most exacting of divers!

Nestled away on a postcard perfect, palm-fringed beach, Murex Bangka offers the quintessential Robinson Crusoe style experience. The Murex organisation has been around since 1987, so these guys really know there stuff when it comes to hospitality and diving. Having stepped foot on Murex Bangka’s beach, you’ll have all the time in the world to simply dive or relax. As a small resort, there are no crowds in sight, leaving you endless time to lounge in a hammock, enjoy a massage, check out some underwater videography or go paddle boarding in the bay. Murex Bangka is the only resort on the island able to offer hot water showers and air-conditioning all through the night. In addition to the international and Asian buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinners served in the indoor and outdoor dining spaces, the resort holds a weekly beach barbeque.

Explore diving around the Murex Bangka Dive Resort

What to see

If it’s weird, you are likely to find it in the Lembeh Straits. Top critters on every diver and photographers wish list include the mimic octopus, Wonderpus, Rhinopias, flamboyant cuttlefish, Ambon scorpionfish, harlequin shrimp, and the very entertaining hairy frogfish. If lucky, you might also come across the delicate Lembeh Sea Dragon. Also, be boggled by the wide array of nudibranch and during night dives, look out for stargazers in the sand and Spanish dancers passing by in the darkness.

At areas like Bunaken and the nearby Bangka, dolphins or pilot whales can sometimes be seen from the surface. Underwater, expect green sea turtles, schools of trevally and colorful reef fish along the many walls. Bangka and Manado Tua also feature a myriad of critters.

If you dive around the Sangihe Archipelago and Talaud Islands, the healthy reefs and volcanic activity yield many colorful reef fish and schools of fusilier, snapper and predators like trevally, barracuda and Dogtooth tuna. Macro life is also abundant and there are pygmy seahorses, crabs and shrimp as well as nudibranch to find at muck dive sites. Look out for pelagic animals which come to feed and clean like manta rays, sharks and even hammerhead sharks.
