Explore diving around the PAPUA EXPLORERS DIVE RESORT

What to see

Raja Ampat will spoil divers with its amazing biodiversity. Within your first few dives, you are likely to spot the wobbegong. These strange carpet sharks are often seen curled up in cabbage corals, waiting to ambush unsuspecting prey.

Next, look out for the black manta rays of Raja Ampat. They can be seen at cleaning stations and sometimes have a white patch on their underbellies. Other large creatures to look out for are nurse sharks and whitetip sharks. Make sure to try out night dives as you might catch sight of the epaulette shark which seems to walk across the reef, or the tiny bobtail squid.

For macro lovers, Raja Ampat is heaven. It is one of the best places to see the Pontoh’s pygmy seahorse, as well as a myriad of nudibranch, frogfish, scorpionfish, blennies, gobies, pipefish, crab and shrimp. Whale shark lovers should head to Cenderawasih Bay. Whale shark sightings here are unique to anywhere in the world as these sharks have learnt to tag along with fishermen, sucking on fishnets for small bait fish left behind.

Dive Center

  • Reefs home to 75% of all hard coral species in the world
  • 15 minutes away from Manta Point
  • Variety of dive excursions to challenge and excite
  • Maximum 6 divers per guide
  • Culturally and environmentally respectful philosophy
  • Free diving and yoga activities

The onsite, PADI 5 Star Dive Center provides a plethora of scuba and free diving excursions. Set at the heart of the Coral Triangle, Raja Ampat is world renowned for its high bio-diversity and pelagic sea life. Such a diversity of life is largely due to the area’s nutrient-rich waters created by fast moving currents. As a result, this dive center is a great location for advanced open water divers, as a higher level of experience will allow you to explore more of the underwater world and trust that your superior buoyancy skills will protect the precious marine environment. However, there are enough dive sites complete a week’s diving without experiencing strong currents, so less experience should not be a barrier to your visit.
Placing an emphasis on respect and support for the local community, Papuan Explorers strive to train and employ a majority of Papuans across all departments of the dive operation. This has equated to 11 skilled Indonesian dive guides (4 of which from the surrounding villages), 5 multinational instructors offering a diversity of specialities, a freediving (and yoga) instructor, 10 highly reliable and experienced boat captains, 10 spritely and resourceful boat crew members and a couple of compressor technicians. All dives are expertly planned to take you on an underwater adventure without the need for a deco stop, though dive computers are mandatory. In the case of emergency, a state of the art Hyperbaric chamber is now available in Waisai (45 minutes away via boat).
