Best dive sites in Bali

USAT Liberty – Bali’s most famous dive site and a chance to see a resident school of bumphead parrotfish, black sand muck diving combined with a coral encrusted wreck. The USAT (United States Army Transport) Liberty was awaiting repairs on the shore when lava flow from an erupting Mount Agung pushed her back into the water where she now lays on her side. Starting at just over 5 meters and extending down to 30 meters this wreck is a marine life hotspot. Look out for barracuda, turtles, pygmy seahorses on fans, numerous species of nudibranch, sting rays and a wealth of critters. Gili Tepekong – These magnificent rock pinnacles are encrusted with a vibrant mix of hard and soft corals and offer stunning underwater topographies ranging from walls and slopes to canyons and swim throughs. Biomass here is exceptional with hoards of fish occupying the reef. It is a great site for spotting reef sharks, seasonal Mola Mola and when looking out to the blue - anything is possible! Due to mild-strong currents, Gili Tepekong is an advanced dive site and is recommended for experienced divers. Gili Selang – Starting out on the black sand slope you’ll be impressed by the variety of nudibranch and other macro critters as you head down to the top of the reef. The reef and wall offer gorgonian fans, rope sponges, branching corals, occasional bommies, colourful soft corals and barrel sponges in the deeper areas. Look out for moray eels, trevally, cuttlefish and pygmy seahorses camouflaged in the fans with schooling fusiliers and passing pelagics in the blue. Due to mild-strong currents, Gili Selang is an advanced dive site and is recommended for experienced divers. Eel Garden – This is a beautiful dive site which takes its name from a sandy ridge, populated by literally hundreds of garden eels which sway to and fro in the plankton rich currents. That’s not all though, this is a diverse dive site where you can spot passing pelagics and a wealth of critters on the reefs and sandy slopes. Underwater Temple – Also known as “Temple garden” or “Taman Pura” this site is an artificial reef designed to look like a traditional Balinese temple. There are sunken stone statues of Buddha and Ganesha behind ornate Balinese gateways. If there was ever a site that reflected Balinese spiritualism underwater, this is it! Bali is home to innumerable dive sites which offer diverse topographies and marine life. Other notable sites in Bali include: Coral Gardens, Napoleon Reef, Secret Bay, Jemeluk Bay and Blue Lagoon.

What to see

Bali is one of the most diverse underwater environments the ocean has to offer. Famous for sightings of mola molas, manta rays and sharks it would be easy to overlook the other riches available. Tuna and barracuda stalk the reef. Vibrancy comes from in the from the 2500 varieties of reef fish that make Balis reefs their home. Octopus, cuttlefish and scorpion fish hide in plain sight. Divers will often encounter turtles here. Play close attention for the macro and muck diving delights. Discover pygmy seahorses, mimic octopus, frogfish and an array of nudibranch. No matter how long you have been diving, unless you have been to Bali before, you are virtually guaranteed to see so many fish and critters that you have never seen before.

Dive Center

  • Convenient, hassle-free diving on some (usually) hard to reach pristine reef systems
  • More than 40 sites and the rides range from 10 minutes up to a maximum of an hour
  • 85% of world’s marine species found in this region- lots to explore!
  • A macro lovers paradise- look out for shrimp, seahorses, nudibranchs and more
  • Dive with endangered sea turtles, splendid octopus and other-worldly cuttlefish
  • Don’t miss out on fluo diving- a completely new perspective!
  • Luxury dive resort right in the epicentre of Wakatobi’s marine biodiversity
  • Quality rental gear, deluxe, spacious dive boats and experienced, dedicated guides
  • Fantastic setting for photographers- calm clear waters and thousands of photo subjects
  • Snorkelers are welcome to join divers at most all sites, instruction is offered

At Wakatobi, diving on some of the most pristine reefs could not be easier. A generous selection of dive sites- home to 85% of the world’s marine species- are at your fingertips. No other dive center in the region offers such brilliant access to the reefs without the need for long, arduous boat journeys. Should you wish for something extra convenient, then why not enjoy a dive on the famous house reef. Some guests never even step foot aboard the luxurious dive vessels as this ‘signature dish’ shore dive right from the beach offers enough diversity and territory to keep them exploring for days.

One thing to make sure you experience during your stay is Fluo diving. See all manner of underwater creatures in a completely new light- quite literally! Not to be confused with bioluminescence (or phosphorescence), fluorescence is the absorption of one wavelength of light and emission of another. What that means, if you get to see coral and creatures emitting colours completely different from how you usually recognise them!

Wakatobi places the utmost concern over reef protection, and allows solo diving for those experienced, instructor level and ‘reef friendly’ divers with adequate back-up gear. Boat dives run in the morning and the afternoon, and night diving is possible daily. The shop stocks quality equipment for rental and all guides are highly familiar with the local reefs as well as camera gear, should you wish for assistance. One-to-one guides may be arranged.
