Resort Description

El Galleon Resort is located in Puerto Galera, just on the North East tip of Mindoro. Originally a fishing community, this corner of the Philippines offers an astounding number of fish and coral species. So many in fact, that when this incredible biodiversity was discovered in the 1980s, the entire area was instantly declared a Marine Reserve. Still protected, these warm, clear waters flourish with all manner of marine animals, especially macro life. In fact, a recent study by the California Academy of Sciences even affirmed that this area around Verde Island was ‘the center or the center’ of marine diversity worldwide, home to numerous rare and threatened species. Look out for lionfish, pufferfish, clownfish, shrimps, frogfishes, groupers and the occasional sea turtle. Though this isn’t all, with 3000+ marine species and over 400 varieties of coral and counting, you’ll never run out of coral gardens, wrecks, walls and crevices within which to look for little underwater critters going about their daily business.

Above the waves, you’ll find tropical islands, dense with lush foliage and finished off with an incredibly warm local welcome. El Galleon Resort focuses on providing all guests with the three pillars of a perfect dive vacation; comfort, relaxation and adventure. An on-site, well-designed PADI Career Development Center (1st in the Philippines), an open air, water front restaurant, three bars (each offering a distinctive atmosphere),  a swimming pool, Le Palm Spa and free WiFi throughout the resort- what more could you ask for? All rooms at the resort are very comfortable and air conditioned. Choose from blissful views of the ocean or pool, or splash out on the penthouse apartment experience complete with a big private balcony, kitchen and adjoining living room. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to excursions. For a relatively remote location, this island provides a plethora of fun, inspirational and educational opportunities; sunset cruises, beach BBQs, Puerto Galera Museum, trekking the Tukuran River, visiting a local Mangyan Village, golf, trail or motor biking, paintball, running, sailing or beach hopping. How will you choose?

Explore diving around the El Galleon Resort

What to see

With over 1200 marine species, 75% of the world’s coral species and the second largest coral reef in the world, you are sure to see something new and amazing in Mindoro.

Mindoro is a great area for spotting barracuda, emperor fish, scorpion fish, moray eel, tuna, batfish, Moorish idol, trevally, and flute mouth. On the more unusual side of things, Mindoro is also home to lionfish, triggerfish, pygmy seahorses, trumpet fish, mantis shrimp, unicorn fish, wrasse, squid, parrot fish and octopus.

Pelagics are plentiful near Pandan Island and Apo Reef. Sightings might include whale sharks, manta rays, eagle rays, devil rays and sharks such as hammerheads and reef sharks.

Wherever you travel to in Mindoro, be it Puerto Galera or Apo, you’ll be filling up your dive logs faster than you can say, “It’s more fun in the Philippines.”
