Spend your days immersed in huge shoals of sardines, as large pelagics and sharks create pockets of clear ocean in a feeding frenzy. This is surely one for the shark-lovers and adrenaline-seekers out there!

The search for the best action is aided by aircraft, scanning the horizon multiple times a day and reporting down to you on sturdy yet fast RIBs. At some stage, you'll stop for a picnic lunch. Besides the sharks and sardine bait balls, you'll witness diving gannets and an incredible host of other marine and bird activity.

Due to the nature of the Sardine Run, you'll be mostly snorkeling, and will only put your scuba gear on in the event of finding a stationary bait ball.

Resort Description

N'Taba River Lodge & Spa is a luxurious, safari-style boutique hotel on the banks of the Umzimvubu River, ideally located for South Africa's epic annual sardine run.

This world-famous event runs from May through July, where billions of sardines – or more specifically the Southern African pilchard Sardinops sagax – spawn in the cool waters of the Agulhas Bank and move northward along the east coast of South Africa, spawning a feeding frenzy for predators along the coastline. Expect shark action, and lots of it!

By late June, the sardines have reached N'Taba River Lodge & Spa, making this the ideal time to book your trip. The resort itself is set between towering cliffs, with traditional thatched-roof buildings dotted amongst amazing tropical gardens. Relax on your terrace, explore walking trails, head to the beach or visit local communities and sample a local Pondo lunch. Of course, there's also a spa for total relaxation if that's more your style.
