Great Keppel Island is home of the woppaburra people with amazing beaches around the island. Some of these have access to a beautiful reefs to snorkel or scuba dive.
Several smaller islands around make great scuba diving spots and are easily reached by boat. In these you can find a great diversity of both hard and soft corals, large sting rays, an abundance of reef fish as well as large cods, sweetlips, wrasses, nudibranchs and turtles.
There is always the chance of spotting some of our local dugongs on one of your trips around the island.
Great Keppel Island is good to visit all year round. However, just like most of Queensland, it has 2 major seasons, wet (Nov-Mar) and dry (Apr-Oct) which corresponds to summer and winter, respectively.
The Summer season comes with more rainfall and wind but higher air and water temperatures.
On the other side, winter days are colder but filled with clearer water and skies which allows for dives with great visibility and some of the most exciting sunsets. During winter is also when whales are migrating and crossing the island. Prepare to have some of the most remarkable shows and even get the chance to see them underwater.
