Koh Phangan's extensive range of hard coral and fringing reefs are a magnet for tropical and pelagic fish. Hunting trevallies and barracuda are often seen darting in and out in front of your eyes.
Diving in Koh Phangan is centered around a 30 meter submerged rock pinnacle with caves and chimneys hosting some of the best whale shark sightings. Thanks to its relatively isolated location, the rock becomes a beacon to nearby marine life and you’re sure to find yourself surrounded by large snapper, blue-spotted sting rays, schools of fusiliers and sizeable groupers.
Whale sharks cruise by with schools of batfish and barracudas shimmering in the blue. Around the island, you’ll find colorful reef fish and an array of macro delights.
Like its two neighbouring islands Koh Samui and Koh Tao, Koh Phangan cycles through two main seasons each year (dry in December-June, wet in July-November) and diving is possible in both.
Due to Koh Phangan's tropical climate, water temperatures stay between 82-87°F/28-31°C with the coolest water temperatures in October-December.
The sea warms up until it reaches its highest point around May and then slowly drops down again towards October. The coolest points of the season are the best to spot cruising whale sharks.
With visibility reaching an impressive 30m, you can truly enjoy the diverse coral environment whilst diving in Koh Phangan. Expect clownfish, angelfish, barracuda and sting rays whatever time of year you decide to visit this paradise island.
