You are invited to join the adventure as part of the official Oceans for Youth Foundation's authorized by the Cuba "People-to-People" Program.

The EcoExploration Program is for any group interested in experiencing multiple land and sea areas of the Gardens of the Queen National Park while Snorkeling shallow Reefs, Lagoons and Seagrass Meadows, navigating through extensive Mangroves on small, private boat tours and discovering pristine beaches guided by local Marine Biologists. This adventure also has optional Scuba Diving (maximum of 4 scuba dives at two sites during a typical one-week charter).

What you can expect

The M/V Oceans for Youth is equipped and staffed to support 'Classroom-at-Sea Programs' for field-based educational opportunities.

The M/V Oceans for Youth is a 100-ft. motor vessel designed as an ecotourism and educational platform that supports Cuban marine research and natural resources monitoring in the Gardens of the Queen National Park, Cuba. It was built for safety and stability, there are three diesel-powered engines providing a top cruising speed of 10 knots.

The M/V Oceans for Youth sleeps up to 24 passengers with a crew of 8. Four separate, semi-private curtained areas each sleep four comfortably in two sets of bunk beds; each bunk has an assigned storage area, individual light and privacy curtain. The central bunk area sleeps eight in single bunks with privacy curtains and individual lights; and there is ample storage for all personal items and gear. All sleeping areas are airconditioned.

There are four marine heads, two private hot showers and two freshwater deck showers. There is a roomy, air-conditioned Dining Area/Salon and a Sun Deck with lounge chairs and picnic tables. Diving and Snorkeling amenities include a large Dive Deck, equipment rinse tubs, camera table with low-pressure air hose, and two fresh water showers. Boat voltage is 110 everywhere with 3-prong or 2-prong plugs in the bathrooms for hair dryers.

Field sites include the following habitats: deep and shallow Coral Reefs, Seagrasses, Lagoon systems, Mangroves and Barrier Islands. All field excursions are from tenders.

The Classroom-at-Sea Program is for any High School (age 15 or older), College, University, Scouting or other educational groups interested in studying marine biology or ecology in the field. Participants will spend 7 nights on the vessel exploring the spectacular Gardens of the Queen National Park, located 60 miles off the southern coast of Cuba.

Throughout the week, your hosts will be Cuban Marine Biologists who guide your daily expeditions and give daily seminars about the wildlife, habitats, and the ecological importance of each. The theme of the week will focus on how Cuba's conservation and management efforts in the National Park have maintained one of the healthiest marine ecosystems in the Caribbean.

The provided course curriculum, “Dynamics and Conservation of Cuban Coastal Ecosystems” is field-based and is taught by Cuban Scientists working and conducting field studies from on board the vessel.

Daily seminars topics focusing on Cuba's marine ecosystems include:

• Ocean Zones and Coastal Communities

• Lagoons and Mangroves

• Seagrasses and Coral Reefs

• Oceanographic Processes and Coastal Ecosystems Interactions
