A diverse land, Malaysia offers diving in Borneo and the islands of the Malay peninsula. One destination in particular, Sipadan, inspires with massive schools of fish and warm, crystalline waters.
Malaysia encompasses both the Malay Peninsula and the northern section of Borneo. With lots of scuba diving destinations, it can be difficult to pick one, but most divers consider Borneo’s Sipadan a must. There you’ll find warm, crystal clear waters boasting huge schools of fish. Seeing a barracuda tornado is a highlight. While it’s possible to visit Sipadan from an operator on Mabul, you’ll get more diving for your dollar on a liveaboard. Another bonus is knowing your permits are sorted. Land-based operators sometimes struggle to secure enough of these. Typical liveaboard itineraries in Malaysia last 4 to 7 nights, and the best time to dive in Borneo is from April to December.
