The dive is named after the ship found sunken at this location. The Gran Roque is a tugboat sunk by Cesar Navas in collaboration with the Venezuelan Navy in 2003. It was the "first" ship voluntarily sunk to create a coral reef with the consent of the Puerto Cabello Captaincy. Shaped charges were used to sink the Gran Roque to minimize damage to the nearby reef. Due to extensive research into the sinking and the explosives used, the Gran Roque rests on its keel on the sandy bottom of the bay, making it appear to be sailing. It lies at a depth of 20 meters, within the limits for recreational diving. It can be reached by boat from Puerto Cabello in about 45 minutes, from Ocumare de la Costa in about 20 minutes, or from Ciénaga itself in 10 minutes.
