With over 11,000 miles of coastline, bays, coves and reef systems, the diversity and volume of marine life here is incredible. Humpbacks, orca, seals, sea lions and hundreds of incredibly colourful invertebrates call these waters home.
Expect beautiful sponges, corals and some of the Pacific Northwest’s iconic species such as giant Pacific octopus and wolf eels. Smitty’s Cove is a 40min drive from Anchorage which passes through North America’s longest underground tunnel.
A protected marine park with a rich history dating back to World War 2, Smitty’s is home to a WW2 wreckage sunken cranes and planes, and vibrant marine life that thrive in all the aforementioned habitats.
You can dive in Alaska all year, make sure to get drysuit certified beforehand or schedule a drysuit course within your trip. A 7mm will not be warm enough for the majority of the year.
