Immersioni in Cairns

Qualche dato

Most of the diving in Queensland is done in buddy-teams, so grab your mate and a dive map and get set for unbridled exploration! As a steward of the underwater world, remember to be considerate of the ecosystems that you're here to admire. To give the corals a helping hand, pack your reef-safe sun cream to protect this iconic yet fragile ecosystem.

Allenamento raccomandato

The Great Barrier Reef is on the bucket-list for any avid diver, so take the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course to make sure you're doing your part to preserve the reefs. Enriched air nitrox is available, so the PADI Enriched Air Diver course is a good idea.

Quando andare

The Great Barrier Reef is a fab diving destination year-round, though there are undeniable differences in the seasons. Cairns is a tropical port city, affording divers the easiest access to the Great Barrier Reef, and therefore less time travelling and more time diving! Bordered by dense rainforest mountains and the Coral Sea, Cairns has two distinct seasons ‘wet’ (December - May) and ‘dry’ (June – November). The wet season brings the rains and humidity and is generally considered the 'low season'. Though great deals can often be found as a result! The dry season brings lower day time temperatures and humidity and overall, a lot less rainfall. This is when most visitors arrives, so be sure to book up in advance to avoid disappointment.

Steve's Bommie - Here you can check out the fish-eating, fiery-colored flame file shell, plus all the other iconic reef fish these reefs are famed for.

Norman Reef - Morey eels, Maori wrasse and giant clams are the regulars at this reef, but visit in mid-winter for the chance to spot minke whales. At night, it's not uncommon to find sleeping sharks in the nearby caves.

Pixie Pinnacle - Part of the Ribbon Reef System and one of David Attenborough's favourites. Here you can see cod, cucumbers, whitetip sharks and rays in amongst colorful hard and soft corals.

Cosa vedere

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the ocean's most important natural assets, home to a huge amount of diverse marine life. Look out for butterfly fish, parrot fish, coral trout, clown fish and surgeon fish swimming around the corals. Look closer and you might discover a blue sea slug, mollusc, sea cucumber or sea worm. Gliding through the channels are often green sea turtles or white tip reef sharks, while spinner dolphins dance in the open blue. Get lucky, and you may even see a minke whale or humpback on it's annual migration.
