The Singliser See, which is located near Borken in Hesse, is known beyond the regional borders as a popular surfing paradise. It is one of four lakes in the Borken Lake District, which covers an area of more than 350 hectares and is extremely popular as a local recreation area. The lake landscape consists of a combination of natural lakes and former opencast mining holes. The Singliser Lake was created by converting a former brown coal mine and extends over a water area of 77 hectares. Between 1972 and 1982 it was flooded with water from the neighboring Gombeth mine. Due to the low occurrence of underwater plants on the sandy bottom and the slight sulfur content of the water, the lake appears almost turquoise, which is why it is also jokingly referred to as the "Hessian Caribbean". Since 2016, five RV parking spaces have been available in the parking lot on the Singliser side, some of which offer excellent views of the lake.
The lake is very good for diving all year round!
