The Open Water Diver course is the first step and results in a license that lets you dive anywhere in the world, to a maximum depth of 18 meters, with another certified diver. This is the course that will literally open a door to a whole new world!
The Open Water Diver course has 3 parts:
>>> Theory
>>> Confined Water Training Sessions (these are your 2 shallow water dives)
>>> 4 Open Water Training Dives
To give you an idea of what to expect, here is our typical course schedule.
Your days will start at 08.00am and finish at approximately 04.00pm, depending on your pace of learning.
The day before you start your course, we ask that you come watch some of the video in order to get a head start on your theory and to make the rest of the course easier and more relaxed for you. You will only need to spend 1-2 hours here at the dive center in our comfortable classrooms.
Day 1
Today you will meet your instructor at the dive center 30 minutes before our scheduled departure time. If you already watched some of the video the night before, your instructor will start to review the theory with you. If not, your instructor will begin briefing you on what to expect for your first day in the water. Once on the dive boat, you will learn about the equipment you will be using and how to set it up yourself. You will complete some of your Confined Water Dives this morning – these are your “swimming pool sessions” except that our swimming pool is right off the beach. You will see fish and other marine life within minutes of your first breaths underwater! During these dives, you will learn and practice scuba skills, most of which you will practice again in the following two days. You will also demonstrate that you are comfortable in the water by floating for 10 minutes and swimming 200 meters continuously. For this swim, you can use any style or combination of styles you prefer, and there is no time limit. After lunch, you will go for your very first Open Water Dive, on which you can dive to a maximum depth of 12 meters. After this dive, we will return to the dive center, where you will continue with your theory.
Day 2
Today, you will once again meet your instructor at the dive center 30 minutes before our scheduled departure time to review the theory you learned yesterday, and to ensure that you understand what you have been learning. You will finish your Confined Water Dives this morning and go for your second Open Water Dive in the afternoon, again to a maximum depth of 12 meters. After this dive, we will return to the dive center, where you will finish your remaining theory.
Day 3
Today you will go for your last two Open Water Dives, this time to a maximum depth of 18 meters. If you chose to finish off all the theory yesterday, then there is nothing to do when you get back to the dive center other than celebrate! Otherwise, you will still have the final exam, a 50 question multiple-choice test that almost everyone passes without any problems.
We choose the dive sites you will dive at with your training requirements in mind, always with your safety being our top priority. While we will do our best to schedule a different dive site for each of your Open Water Dives, this is not always possible due to currents and weather conditions. Be assured though, that you will see plenty of marine life during your training dives, which your instructor will review with you at the end of each day.
