SPECIAL COVID-19 PROTOCOLS QUINO EL GUARDIAN SEA OF CORTEZ WELCOME! It is a pleasure to welcome you aboard Quino el Guardian. We are as excited as you are to embark on this adventure. We look forward to sharing the Sea of Cortez with you and giving you many opportunities to relax and have fun. So that we may give you the best experience possible, we have implemented some protocols to lessen the possibility of infection during this time of COVID-19. We ask for your help in making this trip safer for you, the other guests, and our crew. FOR THE SHUTTLE AND BEFORE BOARDING: At 1 pm, you will meet the shuttle, Head Out to Rocky Point, at Terminal 4, Door 5, outside on the far side of the street. There will have three vans (when we have 20 guests) to take you to Puerto Peñasco. Your trip leader will have the names of the people who will go into each van. The driver will take your temperature before boarding. If you have a temperature of 100.4F/38C or higher, you will not be able to board. We ask that you wear a mask throughout your travel. At the border to Puerto Peñasco, you will need to present your reservation confirmation. This confirmation will be matched to a passenger list that is given to the Convention & Visitors Bureau. Please keep your mask on as it is mandatory and required by local authorities. Crew members will meet you at the marina. We are there to handle your luggage, so please let us help you. The crew will disinfect your luggage prior to bringing it on board. To make this process more efficient and improve your experience, please show our crew your bags and let us know where you would like us to take them. For example, let us know if your bag is to go to the Dive deck Camera table Your room Before boarding the boat, we will have a medic take your temperature and do a brief examination to ensure the health and safety of all those aboard. It is the doctor who will have the final call whether we can allow you aboard. We hope you understand that this is a complicated situation for both of us, and the very last thing we want is for you to have a negative experience. If you are concerned that this could happen to you, we suggest you consider travel/trip interruption insurance or travel medical insurance. Be sure to check with your insurer for Coronavirus coverage. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding. We intend to do everything possible to ensure everyone's safety and have regulations from local and federal authorities that we must meet. UPON BOARDING: We recommend that you wash your hands. After that, you are free to begin to relax. We ask that you avoid the dive deck and camera table until everyone is on board. We ask that facemasks be worn by all guests when indoors. We have facemasks for guests who need them. Facemasks are optional outdoors and on pangas. Our crew will wear facemasks when in the interior areas of the boat. They will not be required to wear facemasks outside. Once all the passengers have arrived, one of the Divemasters will announce the schedule for dinner and the welcome briefing. EACH DAY: We will maintain a temperature record for all guests and crew that to be kept in the Captain's Log. Temperatures will be taken twice a day by one of our Divemasters as follows: 1. Before the first dive of the day 2. At the end of the day's activities One of our Divemasters will speak with each guest daily and ask for possible symptoms or changes in health. This, too, is to be kept in the Captain's Log. We ask you be honest and tell us if there have been any changes that could compromise your health or that of others. Remember that it is our goal to keep all our guests and crew as safe as possible. Therefore, if you feel any of the following symptoms during your trip, please inform us immediately: Headache Cough Fever Runny nose Pain in muscles or joints Irritated eyes Pain or burning throat Difficulty breathing It is important to note that other factors could cause some symptoms. We remind all divers to stay well hydrated to avoid headaches, eat healthily, and avoid excessive use of alcohol, especially if you are going to dive. There are multiple garbage containers throughout the ship and ask that you use these when you finish using napkins, tissues, canned soft drinks, beers, and snacks. We want to keep our areas as clean as possible. If you have any questions or concerns during your trip, please contact one of our Divemasters, who will be happy to guide you in what options are available to keep you and others safe. MEALS: We will have two seatings for all meals. Please wash your hands before entering the dining room and bring a facemask or handkerchief if you feel you may cough or sneeze. If any guest shows symptoms, they will not be able to access the dining room, and we will take their meal to their room. EVACUATION PLAN IN CASE OF A SUSPECTED CASE OF COVID-19: If any passenger presents symptoms such as a fever higher than 100.4F/38C, a cough, runny nose, pain or burning throat, or respiratory distress, they must immediately inform one of the Divemasters or Captain. The guest will be taken and restricted to cabin #6 and bathroom #1 will be for their exclusive use. Meals will be brought to the cabin. Facemasks will be mandatory as a preventive measure when receiving a meal. The roommates will vacate the cabin and a crew member will clean and disinfect the cabin. Once cleaned and disinfected, the guests will be able to return to the cabin. Dependent upon when this happens during the trip and the severity of the symptoms, the Captain will determine the best course of action; an evacuation or we end the trip early and return to Puerto Peñasco. Once this is determined, a general announcement will be made to all guests. This announcement will state that a guest has presented some symptoms and the next steps. Should an evacuation be deemed best, the evacuation will be in Bahía de Kino, Sonora, where we will have a better medical evaluation. Based on the medical assessment, a decision will be made about whether the guest will return home or stay a few days at a place of their preference. The guest will absorb these costs. This is an additional reason why we highly recommend that you review your travel/medical insurance for coverage should this occur. The guest's room with a suspected case of COVID-19 will be quarantined until arrival in port so that it can be thoroughly disinfected. No one can enter during this time. Once the evacuation is complete, the boat will depart and continue with the rest of its itinerary. The guests and crew will continue to be monitored. If anyone else presents similar symptoms, we will need to end the trip and return to Puerto Peñasco immediately. Our goal is to ensure the best experience possible while ensuring everyone’s safety. We appreciate your assistance as we comply with the state's guidelines and federal laws of the government of Mexico.

Dora and Francisco (Lolo) Sandoval are the proud founders of Quino el Guardian, and their first ship, Rocio del Mar. Lolo has been a comercial fisherman and Captain on the east coast most of his adult life, and Dora’s dream has always been to live in the ocean. 

Although Lolo had been a commercial fisherman most of his life, diving the Sea of Cortez on Rocio del Mar and developing relationships with scientists and conservationists has motivated him to work toward saving our oceans. He refitted Quino to serve as a research, investigation and education ship. Redesigning Quino into a vessel specifically built for scuba diving and scientific research presented endless challenges, but visualizing it’s mission and the results it will generate on conservation and protecting our ocean inspires him to persevere.

When they began with their first ship, Rocio del Mar, Dora and Lolo were introducing not only the ship, but also the Northern Sea of Cortez as a dive destination. Along with expeditions to the Socorro Islands, their books filled with recreational diving trips to the point they could no longer accommodate research and investigation trips.The need for a vessel in the science and investigation field was huge. 

WHAT TO EXPECT

The vessel is 90 ft long with a 25 ft beam, Quino holds room for 16 passengers with additional space for two of the group leaders in the crew quarters. 5 cabins: 4 cabins with 4 beds and 1 cabin with two beds.
There are two bunks on each side, equaling 4 beds with privacy curtains. Each cabin is outfitted with 4 large size drawers, one for each guest. There is one cabin with 2 bunks that sleeps 2. There is A/C throughout for everyone’s comfort. 

4 spacious community bathrooms with a full size shower in each. There is a galley that comfortably accommodates all 16 passengers with a projector and a drop-down screen for group presentations. The salon is comfortable with sofas, a TV and a computer table set up. Large shaded Sundeck with lawn chairs, perfect for relaxing between dives.

Bring your appetite as our food is what makes us so popular!   

All meals and snacks are included.  Start your day early with a heavy continental breakfast with bagels, toast, yogurt, fresh fruit, cereals, fresh juices, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. After your first dive you will enjoy an American style breakfast consisting of items such as pancakes, waffles, eggs, breakfast meats, and potatoes.  After your second dive you will come back to a hearty lunch that starts with a home-made soup followed by a plated meal such with fish, beef or chicken, fresh vegetables, home-made pasta salads, burgers, fish tacos, and more.  

In the mid afternoon our chef will prepare a lovely snack with items such as mini sandwiches, sliced cheese and meats, nachos, guacamole, etc.  You will end your day with a wonderful, three course dinner that starts with a salad, a main course with seafood, beef, chicken or pork cooked with savory spices, paired with vegetables, pastas and potatoes.  Desserts are a sweet surprise made fresh daily.

Weather permitting we have special evening on the top of our boat where our chef prepares carne asada and the entire crew joins in to serve you.   

Hot and cold beverages are available throughout the day including canned soft drinks. The Quino provides complimentary beer and wine after your last dive of the day.

It is equipped with state of the art electronics and all safety equipment required.We carry the conscience and awareness of keeping our oceans protected. 

The time we spent with marine biologist groups on our sister ship, Rocio del Mar, has been specially precious, giving a sense of direction to the whole project, surrounded by open minds whose only interest was making the world a better place.

On these trips you will be able to dive alongside scientists and help them in their research on sharks and mantas. This is a unique opportunity to get closer to these beautiful animals by helping protecting them and understanding their behaviour.
