Liveaboard Diving in Fiji

Called the Soft Coral Capital of the World, Fiji boasts friendly locals as well as underwater marvels from huge sharks in strong currents to tiny nudibranchs on gorgeous reefs.

Fiji liveaboards

Fiji, the hearth of the South Pacific, consists of 330 islands. Many of its best diving areas, including the Kadavu Great Astrolabe Reef and Wakaya Islands, are located far from the Viti Levu, Fiji’s main island. While there are diving resorts scattered throughout Fiji, liveaboards are the best option for those divers who want to see the most of Fiji’s underwater environments. Most of the liveaboard cruises in Fiji last 7 to 10 nights. The Nai'a is a luxurious liveaboard with 25 years experience in the region. On this vessel, you'll sail in style through the South Pacific. The Aggressor Fleet also operates a boats in Fiji, namely the Fiji Aggressor. This steel-hulled ship offers the stability and convenience the Aggressor Fleet is known for. Either liveaboard will give you a holiday to remember in the Soft Coral Capital of the World.

Diving in Fiji

Quick facts

Fiji is a world class diving destination that caters to all ages and skill levels. From soft corals to plenty of pelagics, it’s likely you’ll find what you’re looking for. Heavy currents sweep in sharks and mantas as well as perfect visibility in places like the Gau and Wakaya Islands. On the other hand, protected bays and coral beds give habitat to an abundance of macro species in Namena and the Bligh Waters. Leaf fish, ribbon eels and a variety of reef fish are common logbook entries. As with most South Pacific islands, Fiji features a large diversity of underwater environments. You’ll encounter high-speed drifts, coral beds with lots of bommies, walls and pinnacles. Beqa Lagoon is a world famous shark dive site, but you’ll also want to visit Shark Reef and the Coral Coast. While there are plenty of sites for pelagic lovers and underwater photographers, wreck divers may wish to look elsewhere for their next liveaboard diving vacation. There aren’t many sunken ships on Fiji dive safari routes. Because of the wide variety of dive sites available, liveaboards in Fiji only require an Open Water certification, but an Advanced certification and at least 10 dives is preferable. Do check with your specific operator for certification requirements.

BEST TIME TO GO

November to April

The best time to dive in Fiji is from November to April although Fiji is good for diving year-round. Within these months, you can expect wet conditions. From November to April, it is summer in Fiji, and it rains frequently. However, during these months, the diving is at its best due to an influx in plankton. Large marine life such as whales and mantas visit during these months to feast on the tiny marine life. Water temperatures usually range from 82 to 86°F (28 to 30°C). With waters this warm, you’ll only need to pack a 3mm wetsuit. In addition, the best liveaboard deals can be found from November to April as this is low season for Fiji. On the other hand, visibility in Fiji is best from July to December. On a good day, you might see seemingly endless visibility, which in reality reaches 200 feet (60 meters). However, the water is cooler, reaching only 71 to 77°F (22 to 25°C). Finally, surface conditions in Fiji can be slightly choppy from July to September, making the liveaboard journey slightly less pleasant. However, these conditions rarely negatively affect the underwater experience.

How to Get to Fiji

Nadi International Airport on Viti Levu is the main point of entry and departure from Fiji. Several major international airlines offer direct flights from North America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. In addition, several domestic flights depart daily. Most liveaboards depart from either Suva, on the eastern side of Viti Levu, or Volivoli Beach, on the north side. For ease of access, Nausori Airport, Fiji’s second largest airport, is only 30 minutes from Suva. Otherwise, contact your liveaboard operator for transfer arrangements.
