Requirements

  • Minimum age: 15+
  • Min. certification: Rescue Diver Certification required
  • Min logged dives: 40 logged dives required
  • - Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care training (or qualifying training) within 24 months - Medically evaluated and cleared for diving by a physician within the past 12 months Please note that completing a theory portion is mandatory for this course (via eLearning or paper materials). What to expect

The PADI Divemaster course takes approximately 50 hours to complete. Some divemaster candidates finish the program in a matter of weeks, others spread their training over many months. As with other PADI courses, Divemaster includes skill practice in a pool or confined water, open water sessions and knowledge development (classroom and PADI eLearning®). During the Divemaster course, you'll study scuba diving physics and physiology, learn to demonstrate scuba diving skills in a slow and controlled manner and strengthen any diving weaknesses you may have (navigation, buoyancy, dive planning, search and recovery, etc.). Your instructor will teach you how to deliver a thorough dive site briefing, lead diving activities and how to respond to and prevent problems when working with student divers. You'll also get practical experience leading a Discover Local Diving program, conducting a Discover Scuba® Diving (DSD®) experience in confined and open water and teaching an Advanced Snorkeler (Skin Diver) course in confined water. You'll also learn how to assess PADI ReActivate® participants and conduct a scuba refresher. To become a certified PADI Divemaster, you must also complete five waterskill exercises, participate in a dive skills evaluation, create a dive site map and an Emergency Assistance Plan. Lastly, you must score at least 75% on an exam about course standards and divemaster responsibilities. You may either take a second exam about the diving environment and dive theory and pass with a score of 75% or better, or you can enroll in PADI Dive Theory Online. Dive Theory Online must be successfully completed before you become a PADI Divemaster, but no earlier than 12 months prior to the start of your divemaster training. Once you're a certified divemaster, you can apply for a scuba diving job close to home or anywhere in the world. Or, you can take the next step and become a PADI Instructor or Assistant Instructor.
