No prior experience with scuba diving is required. You must be in good physical health and be able to float for 10 minutes and swim 200 m unaided and without stopping.

What to expect

Your PADI Open Water Course at Cha Cha Cha Dive Shop

Get ready to start your scuba journey! Here’s exactly what to expect when you sign up for the PADI Open Water Diver Course with us:

1. Meeting Point & Welcome

We’ll meet at Cha Cha Cha Dive Shop, located conveniently along the waterfront in Cozumel. One of our friendly staff members will greet you, check your documents, and make sure you’re all set. We’ll provide you with any gear you need and answer any questions before heading out.

2. Briefing & Gear Setup

You'll receive a full orientation from your certified PADI instructor — covering safety procedures, dive theory, hand signals, and what to expect underwater. You'll also learn how to set up your scuba gear step by step. Don’t worry — we go at your pace!

3. Confined Water Dives (Training Sessions)

Next, we’ll head directly to a shallow area in the ocean (yes — your training is in the sea, not in a pool!) where the water is calm and clear — perfect for beginners. Here, you’ll practice essential scuba skills like mask clearing, regulator recovery, and buoyancy control under the close supervision of your instructor.

4. Open Water Dives

Once you’re comfortable and confident with your skills, it’s time to explore! Over the course of two days, you’ll complete four open water dives at some of Cozumel’s beautiful reef sites. These dives give you the chance to apply everything you've learned — and see incredible marine life like colorful fish, coral formations, rays, and maybe even turtles!

5. Certification & Celebration

After completing your dives and passing all required skills, congratulations — you're officially a PADI Open Water Diver! You’ll receive a temporary certification card, and your official PADI e-card will arrive by email shortly after.

To finish off, we’ll return to the shop, where you can celebrate your new certification, take photos, and grab a cold drink if you’d like.
