Best dive sites in Ambergris Caye

There is a great variety of dive sites from shallow coral gardens to steep walls as well as canyons, channels, seagrass beds, and mangrove sites. Diving the Great Blue Hole is an absolute must but do note that it is a deep dive. You have to go beyond 100ft (30m) to see the cave and its formations (max depth 130ft). The caves are spectacular! Other areas that must be visited include Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe Atoll, and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve which is just off Ambergris Caye. Wherever you dive, visibility is likely to stretch beyond 100ft (30m).

Snorkeling in Ambergris Caye

The Belize Barrier Reef is perfect for snorkelers. You’ll be able to access many of the same areas as divers do with the help of a snorkeling tour. These are easily arranged through any operator on Ambergris Caye. At Shark Ray Alley, you’ll also be able to get close to stingrays and nurse sharks.

Ramon’s Village Divers is conveniently located on the resort’s private pier, just steps from your accommodations and the white sand beach.

Because of its spectacular dive sites, Belize attracts divers from around the world and the Ramon’s Village Divers’ dock is the perfect launching point for any underwater excursion. Over 40 named dive sites along the Belize Barrier Reef, all within a 15 minute boat ride, provide canyons and swim throughs where marine life abounds. Dive the Turneffe Atoll and the Great Blue Hole at the Lighthouse Atoll.

 As a PADI 5* IDC Center, you are in safe hands with Ramon’s Village Divers whether you are trying diving for the first time, or embarking on pro level training. Since 1989 the shop has been managed by Rick Sutherland, who take’s utmost care in selecting the best of the best staff that Belize has to offer. Step aboard any of the 6 spacious dive vessels moored on the dock, and look forward to the comfortable 5-15 minute journey to your dive site. Trips depart at 9:00am, 11:30am and 2:00pm, and due to the closeness of the dive sites, the boat returns to the dock between dives. This means you can pick and choose a dive schedule that works for you! If you want to bring your own gear then do so- you can store it free, in the locker room right on our pier. If not, the dive shop owns a large selection of high quality, well maintained equipment for rental.

Resort Description

Ramon's Village Resort was set up by Jacques Cousteau's former dive guide and has all the spectacular underwater experiences you'd expect from such lineage.

Ramon was a guide for Jacques and his team when they first discovered the Blue Hole back in the 70s. Almost 50 years later, Ramon’s Village Resort is a well-established, thriving and highly respected dive resort in San Pedro.

Designed with Polynesian style in mind, discover thatched roof cottages dotted among gardens packed with lush bougainvillea, lilies, hibiscus and palm trees. Winding its way between the tropical flora and only steps from your room is a sparkling blue pool, perfect for cooling off in the heat of the midday sun. 

In addition to world-class diving and snorkeling, enjoy fishing, beach picnics, cave tubing, a sailing cruise, Mayan ruins, bird watching, zip lining or an adventurous tour of Bacalar Chico Reserve.

How to get there

Arrival

  • From Belize City Airport, you may reach San Pedro by water taxi or plane. Please note - during the COVID-19 pandemic, the water taxi is unlikely to be in operation. 
  • By plane: Tropic Air and Maya Island Air operate regular flights from Belize to San Pedro. Flight time is around 20 minutes.
  • By water taxi: Ferries depart from Belize Marine Terminal daily, and the journey lasts around 85 minutes. 
  • The resort can pick you up from San Pedro airstrip (for free);   it is only a six minute walk if you arrive by ferry, and a two minute walk if you arrive by plane.
  • A transfer from Belize International Airport to San Pedro Airstrip can be arranged for an additional fee
  • Check in is at 3 pm.

Departure

  • Check out is at 12 pm.
  • The resort can take you back to the San Pedro airstrip (for free).
  • From there, you will need to arrange your own transport to Belize City Airport by plane or ferry (as above).
