Explore diving around the Matava Eco Resort

What to see

While diving the Great Astrolabe Reef, take the time to enjoy the healthy coverage of hard and soft coral. Sponges, sea whips, sea fans and giant clams crammed on to coral bommies make for a wonderful sight. Manta rays are a highlight at Kadavu and they often frequent cleaning stations at the southern part of Kadavu Island. As such expect to see many colorful butterflyfish and cleaner wrasse at these sites.

Amongst the pinnacles, passages and along walls, you are likely to bump into friendly green sea turtles, humphead wrasse and also large and sometimes inquisitive potato cod. Schooling fish like sweetlips, snapper and fusilier are also common and these attract hunters like giant trevally, mackerel and tuna. At a dive site called Seafan Alley, there have been sightings of hammerhead sharks but usually at depths below 100ft (30m).

Dive Center

  • Over 20 spectacular dive sites, including exclusive diving on virgin reefs.
  • Observe oceanic and resident manta rays.
  • Large marine reserve with coral gardens and fast drift dives.
  • Shark Alley and Spot X are just 20 minutes away.
  • Humpbacks, tiger sharks and whale sharks have all been seen here.
  • Explore The Golden Chimney - a hole through the reef covered in yellow soft corals.

Resort Description

Matava Eco Resort is a truly eco-conscious resort where you can indulge your spirit of adventure at a gentle pace.

Honeymoon and Oceanview bures sit in discreet clusters between swathes of untouched rainforest. There are no roads in Matava, only a network of peaceful trails connecting one village to the next, making the whole island incredibly peaceful - and ideal for rainforest trekking. Plunge into one of the many waterfalls and pools that slice down through the rugged highland and watch as the local children leap from dizzying heights.

Matava places a lot of importance on Fijian community and is a wonderful place to learn about traditions and culture. The resort partners with local beekeepers and splits the honey 50/50 to benefit all involved, and there's an organic farm and orchard on site. Visit schools, sample the local drink made from the root of a pepper plant or join a local medicine man on a plantation walk to learn the healing properties of plants.

The 5* PADI center on site dives the Great Astrolabe Barrier Reef extensively and caters for all levels of diver. The reef is regarded as one of the best in the world for its marine diversity and clear visibility. The Manta Reef dive - a feeding station for manta rays - is easily accessible from here too. End your dives and treks with a warm foot soak in fragrant coconut milk bath at the onsite spa.

How to get there

  • Take a complimentary 45 minute boat ride from Vunisea Airport*
  • Check Out is 10 am

  • Check Out is 2pm
  • Take a complimentary 45 minute boat ride back to Vunisea Aiport

*Upon arrival you will be met by one of Matava's boatmen who will load you and your luggage into a truck for a 5 minute ride to our guest transfer boat. The truck may stop for a few minutes along the way to collect some resort supplies. The boat will be waiting at anchor in a small calm mangrove bay. Depending on the tide, you may have to walk out in ankle deep water to board.

Water is available on the boat. For smaller groups, the transfer boat is a longboat. This is the common form of transport on the island - Kadavu's version of a taxi. Longboats do move faster, but as they do not have canopies, please make sure to have sunscreen, sunglasses and hats handy. You may get a little wet from the ocean spray.

The ride to the resort can take up to 45 minutes depending on the tides and weather conditions. The ride is beautiful and our boatman will happily slow down/stop for photos.
