Description

Matafonua has its own PADI Scuba Diving Centre onsite, and runs dive trips from the resort on a daily basis.

Many dive sites are situated nearby, including coral gardens, swim-throughs, pinnacles, tunnels and more. Our remodelled dive boat now has new engines and bigger fuel tanks to allow access to sites further afield.

And with a maximum capacity of 24 at the resort, the house reef and various dive sites won't feel busy.

Divers get the chance to spot sharks, dolphins, turtles and mantas as well as macro-critters like nudibranch and shrimp. You can also snorkel with humpback whales, who return to the waters around Ha'apai yearly to mate. Boats stop around 200m from these gentle giants, guided by our experienced captains.

Resort Description

Matafonua Lodge overlooks a lagoon on the very tip of Foa Island, part of Haʻapai, a group of islands, reefs and shoals situated in the central part of Tonga.

This is a small, family-run boutique resort with only 10 traditional fales on site. These are thatched from local materials and decorated with local flowers, including red-blossomed heilala, plus frangipani and hibiscus. The grounds combine Tongan white sand trails between grassy patches and palm trees.

Each fale is equipped with electricity and hot water and the on-site restaurant serves a variety of international and local cuisine. The small island is packed with activities, including kayaking, paddle boarding, bush and reef walks, free diving, fishing and cycling. At the southern end of the eastern beach, you'll find stunning petroglyphs to study.

The house reef stretches for 400m and is located steps from the beach, while the clear, nutrient heavy waters provide good conditions for marine life to thrive.
