Description

Together with Insider Divers and award-winning photographers Simon Lorenz and Tim Ho, travel to photography-haven Anilao in the Philippines and take your skills to the next level.

  • Are you intermediate but felt you haven’t really broken through and have lots of unanswered questions?
  • Are you new to underwater photography and want to learn quickly?
  • Are you advanced but have some techniques that you just have not cracked yet?

Joining our workshops helps everyone with their photo skills as we have various trainers on site and will offer teaching sessions at various levels.

THE LOCATION

Just a few hours south of Manila lies Anilao - one of the oldest and most famous dive areas of the Philippines. It has some of the best conditions for underwater photography in the world, particularly for photographing macro subjects, nudibranchs, rare underwater critters such as frog fish, octopi and bizarre shrimps and crabs. In the last three years Anilao Photo Academy (APA) by Tim Ho has gained a lot of fame for some of the best places in the world for photography training and blackwater diving.

There is also wide-angle to be had with rich soft and hard coral gardens. The reefs of anilao are extremely healthy, at shallow depths and at very deep depths. Reef fish are plentiful at every dive site, although larger fish and pelagics are not that common but you still get schools of jacks and occasional visits of sharks, rays and turtles. But Anilao is a macro photographer's paradise.

The beginning of the year has slightly cooler temperatures which brings out one of our favourite macro subjects - nudibranchs in all sizes and colors. Coincidentally these are particularly good photo training subjects as they do not move much.

THE WORKSHOP

Our workshop concept is hands-on - there will be several talks a day on techniques and the instructors will work with you above and below water to develop your abilities. We share our divemasters between two people only, and these guides are also all photographers. So you will have assistance at all times.

Intermediate and advanced shooters will learn how to shoot clean black backgrounds, how to take advantage of full manual mode and work on creative techniques such a slow-shutter, snoot-lighting, LED lighting or backlighting as well as digital editing (Photoshop and Lightroom). We will work with creative backgrounds and apply special techniques such as long-exposure. And you can learn from award-winning photographers Tim Ho and Simon Lorenz.

Or are you completely new to photography? Or just bought a new kit and would like to quickly make the most of it? In this workshop you will learn everything from scratch and you will be able to learn advanced topics as you feel comfortable. We will also do provide introductions to Lightroom and Photoshop as well as advanced training sessions.

The workshop is led by award-winning photographer Simon Lorenz and photographer trainer Pauline Wong. Photography legend Tim Ho will host guest talks on specific topics such as how to win awards and how to use various light sources.

BLACKWATER

A second focus of this trip will be Blackwater diving as the latest and most exciting trend in Macro Photography! January to March is the best time for blackwater photography and we have picked the part of the month with complete darkness around New Moon which brings the most exciting critters to the surface.

Every night there will be the option to do Blackwater dives and we will provide flexibility for those who want to concentrate on this particular technique. It is even possible to do two blackwater dives a night.
