Good to know
Our 4 lakes
Lake Davos
The lake was created by a landslide from the Totalp in the Parsenn area, which dammed the waters of what is now the upper landwater area, which had previously flowed towards Prättigau. However, the water did not flow over and cut up the landslide mass as in the Ruinaulta, but was able to flow off on the slightly lower opposite side of the valley and has been eating into the rocks of the Zügen Gorge since then. The Davosersee is the rest of this lake, which once encompassed the entire low-slope modern high valley and was later largely filled up by the bed load from Flüelabach and Dischmabach. On the other hand, the growing alluvial fan of the Flüelabach gradually increased the altitude of the lake runoff towards the land water,
Lake Davos not only gets its water from the inflowing streams such as the Totalpbach, but also through groundwater inlets from the alluvial fan of the Flüelabach. The former natural outflow, the lake water, was the beginning of the land water, despite the lower water flow compared to the Flüelabach. This situation has changed significantly today due to hydraulic engineering measures for energy production.
Lai da Palpougna
The meaning of the name Palpuogna is not known, but is considered the oldest surviving name in connection with the history of Bergün and was already mentioned in 1139 in connection with the demarcation of the episcopal area.
The lake is about eight kilometers above Bergün on a prominent valley at the foot of Piz Palpuogna and can be reached via the Albula pass road. The right side of the valley is marked by Piz Üertsch and Piz Muot. It is about five kilometers from the lake to the Albula Pass.
The water of the lake with its clear blue-green tones offers a play of colors, especially in autumn when the larches surrounding it are yellow.
The water of the originally natural lake was used to generate electricity from 1898. For this, the level was increased slightly (approx. 30 cm) by a wall. The Palpuognasee has been a reservoir since then. The water is led through a pressure line to Preda, where electricity is generated. The plant was built at that time to generate electricity for the construction of the Albula tunnel and is now owned by the Bergün electricity plant. Water was also taken from the lake during the construction period from 1899 to 1903 in order to operate the Brandtschen rock drilling machines in the northern section. These drills had a pressurized water drive.
The bottom of the lake has many craters from which natural gas emerges. In places, the lake has a double bottom, that is, an underground lake chamber.
In June 2007, the lake was voted “Switzerland's most beautiful spot” in a SF 1 survey
Without Segl
The Silsersee lies at almost 1800 meters above sea level between the towns of Sils (east) and Maloja (west). The valley road between the two towns runs on the northern, somewhat less wooded bank. The southern bank is not continuously passable. There is the Maiensäß Isola on a fill. The embankment approximately in the middle of the lake is caused by the inflow of the Aua da Fedoz from the hardly developed Val Fedoz. This southern side valley extends about nine kilometers south to Piz Fora. There are no side valleys north of the lake, but Grevaselvas' Maiensäss, famous for a Heidi film.
Lai da Marmoera
The Lai da Marmorera is a Swiss reservoir in the canton of Graubünden in the municipality of Surses. It can be reached from Tiefencastel or from the Engadin from the village of Silvaplana via the Julier Pass. The only town on the lake is Marmorera. Above the western end of the dam is the ruins of the Marmels Castle. It is special that the dam is an earth dam.
