Description

Since 2007, Svalbard Adventures has been offering extraordinary Arctic expedition experiences unlike anything else in the world.

Join one of the Orca Expedition Trips — 3-day or 6-day liveaboard safari adventures aboard the MS Sula. Each year, from mid-October to mid-February, the Troms region in the far north of Norway becomes home to what is likely the world’s largest gathering of killer whales, drawn by the massive schools of herring that fill the fjords.

Witnessing the northern lights from the deck of the MS Sula is truly breathtaking. With nothing blocking your view, you'll enjoy some of the best photo opportunities and a front-row seat to one of nature’s most stunning displays.

MS Sula is a 91-foot former fishing vessel — not luxurious, but full of character. Its authentic charm and rustic feel add to the sense of adventure. Life on board is cosy and communal, with much time spent sipping tea, enjoying hearty meals, and soaking in the scenery. During the short Arctic daylight hours (from about 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM), guests explore the fjords in search of orcas and humpback whales. In the evening, relax in the fire-heated hot tub or take an invigorating dip in the icy Arctic waters — a favorite among guests.

The boat accommodates up to 12 guests and has a crew of five, ensuring personal attention and a welcoming atmosphere. There’s a lounge, equipment room, and drying area for clothes. Accommodations include 2 cabins with four beds, 5 cabins with two beds, and 1 cabin with three beds. There are two shared toilets and two showers, and each cabin has its own wash basin with hot and cold running water.

All meals are included, lovingly prepared by a professional chef who caters to all dietary needs without compromising on taste. Alcoholic beverages and additional soft drinks are available for purchase on board.

The orcas you’ll encounter belong to the “North Atlantic Type 1” ecotype, living in tight-knit pods and often seen in large groups. They use a technique called “carousel feeding,” herding herring into tight balls and stunning them with tail slaps before feeding. These fjords are also a seasonal home to humpback whales, which hunt using dramatic lunge-feeding behavior — a natural spectacle not to be missed.
