If you think freediving is just like snorkeling, think again. During the PADI Freediver™ course, you'll learn how to dive deeper, stay down longer and feel part of the underwater world.
Ready to learn to freedive? The PADI Freediver course is designed for beginners. No previous experience is required. Although freediving may seem relatively simple, there is a lot to learn about safety and physiology. An untrained freediver risks injuries to the ears, sinuses and lungs, blackouts and the potential to drown. Freediving lessons with an experienced, insured PADI® Freediving Instructor can help you avoid serious risks and quickly improve your skills. Learn about freediving equipment, how your body responds to breath holding and discover important safety rules and buddy procedures. Your in-water training begins in a pool or a calm water (confined water) environment. You'll learn breathing techniques, how to hold your breath while floating (static apnea) and while swimming (dynamic apnea). You'll also practice basic rescue techniques and learn your role as a buddy. Upon completion of confined water training, you will be able to perform static apnea for 90 seconds and dynamic apnea for 25 metres/80 feet. During at least two open water sessions, you will practice holding your breath while pulling yourself down on a line (free immersion) or submerging yourself upside down while following a line (constant weight). As you learn to relax, you will gradually dive deeper until you reach at least 10 metres/30 feet (freedivers under 18 may dive to a maximum depth of 15 metres/50 feet). Open water sessions will also include rescue practice. The PADI Freediver course is performance-based. This means your instructor will focus on helping you become a confident and comfortable freediver, not on a strict schedule. Progress at your own pace depending on how easy or difficult freediving is for you. If open water training is not feasible or desirable, you can earn a PADI Basic Freediver certification by completing only the confined water knowledge and skills portion of the PADI Freediver course.
