Holiday Season
Guanacaste Province offers a varied mix of coastal and offshore dive sites, with some of the region’s best-known diving found around the Catalina, Bat and Tortuga Islands. These offshore areas are particularly popular with divers looking for bigger marine life and more adventurous underwater experiences.
Near the Catalina Islands, Cueva del Tiburón, also known as Shark Cave, is known for sleeping reef sharks, while Big Scare near the Bat Islands is famous for adrenaline-filled bull shark encounters. Closer to shore, Cabeza de Mono is a great site for watching rays pass by, and Punta Gorda and Punta Argentina also offer healthy tropical fish life.
There are also approximately 20 dive sites near the Playas del Coco shore, making it one of several established dive areas within Guanacaste.
Snorkelling conditions along the Guanacaste coast can vary, especially in areas where visibility is affected by Pacific currents and where coral is limited close to shore. However, the region still offers some rewarding snorkelling spots, particularly around sheltered bays and reef areas reached by boat.
Playa Guacamaya and Nacascolo are among the better-known snorkelling areas in the region, both offering coral formations and a good variety of marine life. These sites are often considered some of the best options for snorkelling in Guanacaste.
Rocket Frog Divers is a standout choice for diving in the Guanacaste area, dedicated to delivering top-notch customer service.
With a focus on quality, they provide excellent equipment and boast the best dive boats in the region. Their fleet of five boats is purpose-built for diving, ensuring comfort for both solo divers and groups.
The skilled crew is eager to introduce divers to Costa Rica’s incredible underwater life, from white tip sharks and stingrays to spotted eagle rays and a vibrant marine ecosystem. Rocket Frog Divers welcomes explorers to discover the stunning Pacific Ocean, where each dive brings new adventures and countless bubbles.
Experience an authentic Costa Rican 'pura vida' lifestyle at the El Mangroove Hotel, nestled on a blue-flag beach.
El Mangroove is surrounded by trees, and howler monkeys can be seen and heard throughout the lush grounds. Poolside cabanas provide peaceful places to relax between dive days. You can dive, snorkel and paddle board on the prestigious blue flag certified beach Playa Panama, directly in front of the hotel.
Food is art at El Mangroove, and you'll have two gourmet restaurants to choose from, or 24 hour private dining. The offsite PADI dive center offers daily dive tours, snorkeling and a full range of PADI course. Local dives are done in the Gulf of Papagayo, while further ashore, you'll visit Catalina Island and the Bat Islands.
