Explore diving around the Flying Cloud Hotel

Best dive sites in Yucatán Peninsula

Punta Cancun – This is a popular spot with divers and provides access to several dive sites and some healthy coral reefs. Located at the eastern end of Cancun's hotel zone, the reefs contain colorful coral formations and you can hang out with a diverse array of marine life, including barracuda, rays and sharks. Punta Nizuc – This site is famous for its snorkeling and diving, thanks to an offshore reef that is rife with abundant marine life. Depths average 10 m/30 ft and the great visibility makes this a spectacular spot where divers meet lobster, groupers, rays, sergeant majors and a host of other marine life. At Punta Nizuc art meets coral reef conservation and divers can visit a statue of a young girl lying in a coral garden. She’s part of an underwater museum, Museo Subacuático de Arte, that’s well worth exploring. Playa del Carmen, Akumal and Tulum – South of Cancun, Playa del Carmen is a bustling town with a European vibe. Akumal and Tulum are seaside villages that offer a glimpse into the Yucatan of yesterday. Generally, the dive sites here are shallow with excellent visibility, and boat rides are as short as five minutes. You’re likely to see turtles, barracuda, stingrays, lobsters and nurse sharks. Pared Verde – Sloping rivers of sand divide sections of the wall which is well populated with coral, sponges and myriad macro invertebrates. Depths to 40 m/130 ft are possible and the currents can be strong. Larger pelagic species are frequently seen here, given the reef’s location in the middle of a sandy plain. Cenotes – If you want to try something truly special, dive a cenote. These deep, freshwater-filled sinkholes formed when the roofs of limestone caverns collapsed and filled with water. The Yucatan’s elaborate cenotes have intricate cave systems and underground tunnels that draw divers from around the globe. Many cenotes boast pristine turquoise waters and a beautiful array of stalagmites and stalactites formed over millions of years.

Snorkeling in Yucatán Peninsula

Non-divers will find plenty of reasons to enter the water in the Yucatan Peninsula. From shore, you’ll be able to access the region’s best reefs and even take a dip in a cenote. If you happen to be in the area from June to September, make sure to take a day trip to Isla Mujeres to snorkel with whale sharks. There are also trips to the deep sea for snorkeling with sailfish for something a little different.

Dive Center

  • XTC Dive Center offer a huge selection of varied dive sites within 30 minutes boat ride, whether it's swim throughs, buzzing reefs, epic formations or deep walls
  • This is the place to go if you want a face-to-face diving encounter with manatees in crystal clear waters within the stunning and pristine Xcalak Marine Reserve
  • Located next door to Floating Cloud, this is a great choice for environmentally-minded divers seeking world-class diving, rustic lodging and easy logistics
  • Special trips are available to swim with American crocodiles and to dive at the famous Chinchorro banks, the largest coral atoll on the Great Maya Reef

XTC Dive Center offers dozens of fantastic scuba dive sites within five to 30 minutes by boat from the dive center pier.

Whether you want to dive with American crocodiles, encounter manatees, explore deep and shallow walls, huge tongue and groove formations, swim throughs or buzzing coral reefs, you'll find it here. The dive center is located on the beach, literal steps from your room. So, expect to step out of city life and into a beach paradise designed for divers, by divers.

As an added bonus, the team offer access to the lesser-known Banco Chinchorro (additional cost), the largest coral atoll on the Great Maya Reef. This is the most extensive reef system in Mexico and has been declared a national marine sanctuary. However, "regular" boat dives take place in Xcalak Marine Reserve which is also a designated marine park.

Resort Description

Flying Cloud Hotel is a remote diver's heaven just north of Xcalak, situated on one of Mexico's idyllic white sand beaches and overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

This pocket-sized four room hotel is one of the southernmost diver's resorts on the Mexican-Caribbean Coast. Situated only a few miles north of the border with Belize and a world away from the urban hustle and bustle, it's a great choice for divers seeking manatee encounters. For those searching for the thrill of a lifetime, special trips are available for snorkelling with the American crocodile!

The hotel is located within a National Park, established in 2000 in order to stave off mass-tourism development  and the ecological impacts that result from them. So, visitors to this rustic (that means no A/C) and colourful paradise will discover a rich and unique ecosystem far away from the crowds of Cancún and the Riviera Maya.

While meals are not included in this package, The Coral Bar & Grill, open from 7am until 10 pm (located in the dive center), will be able to supply you with a good variety of choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
