Best dive sites in Malapascua

Monad Shoal – This submerged sea mount is Malapascua’s most famous dive site and the best spot for thresher sharks sightings. Diving here is either a “swimming dive” or on a stationary line waiting for the sharks to approach. Close encounters with these incredible predators are not unusual. It’s a thrilling experience and a must-do if visiting the Philippines to dive. Gato Island – This marine reserve and sea snake sanctuary offers a huge diversity of marine life. You’ll find stunning corals, swim throughs and rock formations, abundant fish life and a plethora of critters. Look out for schooling fish and cruising reef sharks. It’s a beautiful dive and every dive here is different. Lapus Lapus – Offering arguably the best coral in Malapascua, this is a kaleidoscopic site which always impresses. You can find frogfish, mantis shrimp, scorpionfish, cuttlefish and octopus on the reef. Macro critters hide out in the shallow water soft coral garden and there is an excellent variety of reef fish. Butong Bato – This underwater pinnacle site is located close to Malapascua and is home to a large school of resident batfish. Corals here are healthy, vibrant and varied. Macro photographers will enjoy the nudibranch species and tiny crustaceans including zebra crabs and whip coral shrimps. Chocolate Island – An absolute must for macro photographers. Chocolate Island is a critter haven and regular sightings include flamboyant cuttlefish, Pegasus seamoths, nudibranch, flatworms, octopus, cowries and a host of shrimps and crustaceans.

What to see

The biggest draw to Malapascua is the year round thresher shark sightings. Other pelagics and predatory species include reef sharks, tuna, barracuda, trevally, jacks and sea snakes. Don’t forget to bring your macro lenses and look out for nudibranch, frogfish, flatworms, pygmy seahorses, seamoths, cuttlefish (including flamboyant), octopus and all manner of miniature crustaceans.

Thresher Shark Divers is the premier dive center on Malapascua and the only PADI 5* CDC.

We offer daily diving in small groups with experienced PADI Divemasters and Instructors, many of them with 5,000+ dives around Malapascua alone.

Malapascua is the only place in the world where thresher sharks can be seen daily. And there is plenty more on offer: wreck and reefs, wall dives and macro dives, drift dives and night dives. There is a little bit of everything. Group sizes are kept small and courses courses are often taught one on one.

A full range of PADI training is available including Instructor and Technical, with one of the most active dive internship programs in the country.

We have spacious Filipino style banka boats offer coffee, tea and drinking water, shaded areas, ample space to set up your gear, and of course we carry first aid kits, phones and oxygen.

Dive shop facilities include internet, charging stations and a safe for valuables, as well as a retail area. The beachfront is home to the Wilde Bar for coffee, shakes and cocktails. Oscar’s Restaurant is upstairs overlooking the beach, which makes it great for sundowners.

Resort Description

Blanco Beach Resort is a small and intimate boutique beach retreat on Malapascua Island.

The hotel is comprised of 10 crisp and fresh guestrooms, all with air condiitoning, large beds and lots of natural light. There is a beach bar serving homemade breakfast dishes made with fresh, local ingredients.

Your room is no more than a three minute walk from the beach, where you will find sunloungers and beautiful sunsets.

Divers get the chance to spot thresher sharks, rays, white tip sharks. cuttlefish, crustaceans and many species of reef fish. Dive amongst coral gardens, wrecks, walls, caves and muck diving sites home to a plethora of macro creatures.

How to get there

  • If you have booked private transfer, a driver will meet you at the airport, hotel or port in Cebu city or Mactan island and bring you to Malapascua. Please look for a sign with your name and “Thresher Shark Divers”.  Total travel time is around 4-5 hours depending on traffic.
  • If you use public transport, take a bus from North Bus Terminal in Cebu to the port of Maya. This can take 6+ hours. From Maya, catch a public ferry, they have no fixed schedule but run approximately between 7am and 5pm.
  • Your flight must arrive before 1pm, otherwise an extra charge for night crossing is required though we strongly advise against night crossings. It is better to stay in Cebu or near Maya port which we can arrange for you.

  • If your departure is included, we will confirm departure time after you arrive. We can guarantee to get you to the airport by 11am, if you need to be there earlier we recommend staying in Cebu for the night.
