Best dive sites in Cebu

Talima – This reef and wall dive is a firm favourite of many Cebu divers due to the healthy, vibrant corals and abundant fish life. Look out for groupers, oriental sweetlips, schooling batfish, jacks and snappers. The remains of the small wreck are teeming with marine life. Nalusuan Island – This marine protected area offers world-class corals, a colourful shallow reef top and a steep slope. The biodiversity is impressive with schooling snappers, trevally, grouper and barracuda as well as a plethora of reef fish. Look out for stingrays, passing sea turtles and even a mermaid statue. This is a stunning dive from start to safety stop. Hilutongan Island – Kaleidoscopic corals, incredible fish biomass, turtles, schooling giant trevally, snapper, jacks and sweetlips are all highlights of this marine sanctuary dive site. The colourful topography, clear waters and calm conditions make this site suitable for all divers and a must for wide-angle photographers. Monad Shoal – Located in Malapascua, in Cebu’s north, this submerged sea mount is one of Cebu’s most famous dive sites and the best spot for thresher sharks sightings. Diving here is either a “swimming dive” or on a stationary line waiting for the sharks to approach. Close encounters with these incredible predators are not unusual. It’s a thrilling dive. Pescador Island - Located in Moalboal, in Cebu’s south-west, this protected marine park is one of the most famous dive spots in the area for good reasons. Underwater, this small island is a diver’s playground with tunnels, caverns and swim throughs. Fish life is abundant here and you’ll find white tip reef sharks, schooling barracudas, sardines, jacks and occasional thresher sharks. The diversity and mass of reef fish is breathtaking.

There is a little bit of everything. Group sizes are kept small and courses are often taught one on one.

But what truly sets us apart is our dedication to conservation and sustainable diving practices. We work closely with local communities to promote awareness and protection of the marine environment, including the thresher sharks, whose presence has made Malapascua a world-renowned diving destination.

We have spacious Filipino style banka boats as well as a speed boat, offer coffee, tea and drinking water, shaded areas, ample space to set up your gear, and of course we carry first aid kits, phones and oxygen.

Blue Corals Beach Resort offers atmospheric beachfront accommodation in Malapascua, Philippines.

Based in the coral triangle, dive sites in this region include coral gardens, walls, caves, wrecks and muck diving locations. Dive into the water and you’ll have a chance to see pygmy seahorses, cuttlefish, crustaceans, rays, large rays and all types of colourful reef fish. Thresher and whitetip reef sharks are sighted year-round.

The resort is located on a fine white sand beach and includes a pool surrounded by lawns, tropical trees and sun loungers. Pale blue, double and single storey buildings and traditional thatched-roof bungalows make up the guest accomodations.

Blue Corals Bar is located at the end of a sandy-floored rocky outcrop with colourful flags, cushioned wooden benches, atmospheric candles and fairy lights and sunset views over the ocean. Happy hour is between 3 and 7pm.

Climate controlled and open-air restaurants serve international and local breakfast, lunch and dinner.

How to get there

Arrival

  • By Air: The closest airport to Malapascua is the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Many international airlines and domestic carriers fly to Cebu. Several airlines fly directly to Cebu, including Singapore, Emirates, Qatar, Korean and Turkish, and more to Manila, which is an easy 75-minute internal flight. Once you arrive at the airport, you can take a taxi or a private car to the Maya port, which takes about 3-4 hours.
  • By Bus: If you are coming from the mainland of Cebu, you can take a bus from the North Bus Terminal in Cebu City to Maya port, which is the jump-off point for Malapascua. The journey takes around 4-5 hours, and the bus fare is around PHP 180-200.
  • By Private Car: You can also hire a private car or van from Cebu City to Maya port. This option is more expensive than taking the bus, but it's more comfortable and faster. The journey takes around 3-4 hours, depending on traffic. Once you arrive at Maya port, you need to take a 30-minute boat ride to Malapascua Island.
  • From the island's port, Thresher Shark Divers is located within walking distance or a short tricycle ride away. The port closes at 5pm, so your flight needs to arrive by about 12pm to ensure getting to Maya in time. Slightly later may be possible. If not, Thresher Shark Divers, can help with accommodation options for the first night; they can also make arrangements for transport to and from other locations and we liaise with other operators.

Departure

  • If your departure is included, we will confirm departure time after you arrive. We can guarantee to get you to the airport by 12 noon, if you need to be there earlier we recommend staying in Cebu for the night.
