Explore one of the most successful National Parks looking for bull sharks at Cabo Pulmo or choose hammerheads at Gordo Banks! Surround yourself with a variety of large aquatic life in Cabo San Lucas Marine reserve. Swim alongside the magestic whale shark. Enjoy Baja's unique and wonderful encounters from your base in Los Cabos
The Winter Sharks package is available November to March. Of course, sharks are ellusive animals, we are very much at the whim of nature! However, with our knowledge and expertize we can certainly put you in the right place at the right time to give you THE BEST chances of enjoying some fabulous shark encounters.
Your package starts at Cabo Private Guide headquarters on the first day. This is where you will meet your guide, fit your equipment, check cert cards and answer any questions you may have for us. We will discuss the logistics of the next 3 days.
Day 1
The first half day of diving is all about acclimatizing to the water as well as familiarizing yourself with equipment and weights before we show you around some of our favourite dive sites. In the marine reserve and corridor area between November to March we typically see: sea lions, eagle rays, reef shark, stingrays, guitar rays, eels, macrolife and mobula rays . Your two tank experience will finish in time for lunch.
Day 2
Open water option: Cabo Pulmo National Park is one of the most important reef systems in the area with an incredibly successful fishing ban that has seen fish biomass increase by 450% since 1995. This, in turn, has seen the return of large apex predators such as the famous bull sharks. Because they move around the park throughout the year and because we do not use chum to attract them, it's definitely not guaranteed that we will see them. We CAN certainly ask the park office to dive at the dive site where they have been seen that week and they will allocate us a space if it is available. And no problem if we don't see them! Other attractions include a huge school of cow nose rays that carpet the reef, jack fish tornedos being hunted by dolphins, many species of ray and also the occasional reef shark. Although high season and clearer conditions are Sept - Dec, summer can provide some incredible diving with fewer divers in the park. This means the dive sites tend to stay open for longer as diver quotas take longer to fill.
Advanced Diver Option : Gordo Banks is known for large aggregations of sharks, schools of tuna, humpback whales, mobula rays and more big life only usually found further into the blue. However please note that Gordo Banks is a hit and miss dive. This means that there are absolutely no guarantees of sharks. What we do guarantee is that you will dive with expert crew that will decide the best descent technique based on conditions (whether a free descent/drift style with surface buoy or if they put a line and float onto the rock with deployed surface marker buoy for the ascent). The captain knows where to position you and will do so with expertise but he has no control over currents below the surface. Most of the time we see the rock, but sometimes we are drifting in blue water. In either case we can see many large pelagics animals, or, we might not see much at all.
Day 3
Your crew will pick you up from the hotel nice and early to get you to La Paz by about 8.30. La Paz is one of the few places in the world where these docile, plankton-eating sharks congregate in huge numbers to feed in the bay. Once we arrive we will be allocated our turn in the queue and will make our way over to the whale shark area. Once inside, we have 2 hours to enjoy the whale shark encounter. After finding a shark to snorkel-swim with, your guide will help you into the water and guide you respectfully alongside the largest fish in the world. It might swim fast, it might swim slow. If you’re lucky there will be a number of them vertical feeding in place and you can just hang out with them on the surface! You crew will then take you for a picnic lunch (all diets catered for) before heading back to Los Cabos.
We are located in Plaza Nautica which is the building next to Tesoro Hotel. There is parking in the car park next to the Casino. The easiest way to find us is to walk to Cabo Cantina bar (not Baja Cantina) on the main road out front and go inside the plaza, then look left. You will see our signage outside under the shady tree If coming from the marina, the dive shop is located behind DOCK J just off the marina. Look up and you will see PLAZA Nautica on the building. From the marina you can cut up towards the main road turning right at Cabo Sailing. The dive shop is across the courtyard.
